From the Mediterranean to the Baltic: RTIS Network Explores Wolin National Park on Day 2 of ARTisGReen

On Day 2 of the ARTisGReen 4th Transnational Meeting, RTIS Network and the 4th Lyceum of Alimos joined partners from six countries for an immersive environmental programme in Wolin National Park, Poland – exploring Baltic forests, coastal ecosystems, and the biodiversity of one of the country's most significant protected areas.

A journey into Poland’s first maritime national park – forests, cliffs, and the wild Baltic coast

Tuesday, 29 September 2026 | Międzyzdroje, Poland

Following the successful opening of the 4th Transnational Meeting in Szczecin, the ARTisGReen delegation travelled to the Baltic coast for a full day of environmental immersion and experiential learning. Students and teachers from Greece 🇬🇷, Romania 🇷🇴, Türkiye 🇹🇷, Poland 🇵🇱, Portugal 🇵🇹, and Estonia 🇪🇪 participated in the programme at Wolin National Park (Woliński Park Narodowy) – one of Poland’s most significant protected areas and the country’s first maritime national park .

📅 Programme of the Day

07:30 | Departure from Szczecin
Delegations departed for Międzyzdroje, a coastal town situated on the island of Wolin.

🏛️ Museum Visit & Workshops
Participants engaged with the natural and cultural heritage of the region through a guided museum visit and structured educational workshops, contextualising the park’s ecological significance within broader European conservation frameworks.

🌲 Wolin National Park – Tour & Workshops
Established in 1960, Wolin National Park protects a remarkable diversity of ecosystems across 10,937 hectares, including forest, aquatic, and non-forest terrestrial environments . Key features include the cliff coastline – the most picturesque section of Poland’s Baltic shore – well-preserved beech forests, the island delta of the Świna River, and the coastal waters of the Baltic Sea . Since 1996, the park has incorporated one nautical mile of coastal Baltic waters, making it Poland’s first maritime national park .

The programme included guided exploration of the park’s ecosystems, environmental workshops, and observation of its exceptional biodiversity. The park serves as a critical habitat for species including the white-tailed eagle (bielik), the park’s iconic symbol and Poland’s largest nesting raptor, alongside otters, orchids, and royal ferns .

🌊 Walk by the Sea
A coastal walk along the Baltic shoreline provided participants with direct sensory engagement with the marine environment – a stark contrast to the Mediterranean context familiar to the Greek delegation.

🎯 Contribution to ARTisGReen Objectives

This day directly advances the project’s core objectives:

✅ Raising environmental awareness – direct exposure to a protected Baltic ecosystem
✅ Connecting artistic practice with natural environments
✅ Promoting sustainable tourism and responsible engagement with protected areas
✅ Strengthening European cooperation through shared outdoor learning experiences

The contrast between the Mediterranean coastal environment of Alimos – urban, warm, and densely developed – and the Baltic island ecosystem of Wolin – forested, temperate, and strictly protected – offered participants a tangible lesson in Europe’s ecological diversity. For students from Greece, this represented an encounter with a fundamentally different natural system, reinforcing the ARTisGReen principle that sustainability requires understanding and valuing all ecosystems, not only those closest to home .

🤝 Acknowledgements

RTIS Network and the 4th Lyceum of Alimos extend their gratitude to Liceum Plastyczne im. Constantina Brancusi for the organisation of this excursion, and to the staff of Wolin National Park for their educational guidance.
